The benefits of the Dead Sea
The Dead Sea contains various skin healing minerals. Many cultures have visited the Dead Sea for therapy, dating back to the time of the ancient Egyptians, utilizing the salt in various skin creams, as well as soaps, just as it is used today. Research has demonstrated that skin disorders such as acne and psoriasis are relieved by regular soaking and washing with added Dead Sea salt. The National Psoriasis Foundation recommends Dead Sea and Dead Sea salts as an effective treatment for psoriasis.
The water of the Dead Sea has a salt content of 33.7%, compared to only 4% in the oceans, and is consequently substantially denser. This allows anyone to easily float on Dead Sea water because of its greater density. Its mineral composition is also different from ocean water varying with season, rainfall, depth, and temperature. The salt in most oceans is approximately 85% sodium chloride while Dead Sea salt is only 12-18% sodium chloride. Refined table salt is approximately 97% sodium chloride. The major ion compounds found in the Dead Sea are Chloride / Bromide at 230,400 (mg/L), Magnesium at 45,900 (mg/L), Sodium at 36,600 (mg/L), Calcium at 17,600 (mg/L) and Potassium at 7,800 (mg/L)
Magnesium, one of the prevalent minerals in Dead Sea salt, is known to exhibit favorable effects in inflammatory diseases and is known to bind water, influence epidermal proliferation and differentiation, and enhance permeability barrier repair. Which means it improves skin barrier function, enhances stratum corneum hydration, and reduces skin roughness and inflammation.
